MarinLink receives Resolution from Marin County Board of Supervisors!

San Rafael, CA (April 23, 2013) MarinLink announced today that it has received a Resolution from the Marin County Board of Supervisors commending MarinLink for:

10 years of serving Marin County through its programs and projects
Our successful Fiscal Sponsorship Program that supports 70+ projects addressing unmet community needs in the areas of transportation, the environment, spirituality, education, health, art and social justice
Generating over 1 million dollars in 2012, creating jobs and volunteer opportunities
Facilitating learning, networking and collaborative efforts to address issues and challenges across all sectors, neighborhoods and age groups

Our ability to work well with our friends and colleagues across all sectors is one of our greatest assets and has allowed us to develop many exciting and successful programs to benefit Marin County and beyond. We are delighted to be in a position to support the work of so many generous people and to be able to say “If it can happen, it can happen here!”

Healthy Marin Watersheds and Creeks

Please join Gallinas Watershed Council on May 1 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm to explore “Healthy Marin Watersheds and Creeks” at San Rafael City Hall. City Councilmember Damon Connolly will host the event.

Across our nation, a watershed approach to protecting our creeks is occurring, bringing back to life the riparian ecosystem and the iconic and keystone species that live there. When we restore our watersheds we give clean water, biodiversity, recreation, beauty, food and enjoyment to future generations.

Join Guest Speakers Laura Chariton and Gordon Bennett as we find out ways we can all be a part of the solution to restoring our watersheds and creeks. A special presentation of successful restorations by the STRAW project (Students and Teachers Restoring a Watershed of the PRBO) will also be given. We will hear about Marin County’s draft Stream Conservation Ordinance and have time for audience Q&A.

Guest speakers:
Laura Chariton, Master’s Degree in Riparian Policy, watershed specialist and a founder of Watershed Alliance of Marin, on what makes a healthy creek and what homeowners can do in their backyards while saving salmon, preventing flooding and water pollution. Past: Board member Mill Valley StreamKeepers.

Gordon Bennett, Salmon Protection and Watershed Network, who will address the draft Marin County Streamside Conservation Area Ordinance currently under review. Current: President, Marin Green Leadership; President Save Our Seashore; Board of Directors Audubon Canyon Ranch. Past: Chair – Clean Energy Committee – Marin Group at Sierra Club; Chair -Parks & Wildlife; Board of Directors – Environmental Action Committee of West Marin.

We Made a Million and Gave It Back

Change is constant but there are some things about Marin that do not change. One integral characteristic of this lovely county is its giving communities. These communities are not defined by cities or lines on a map, they are comprised of individuals, couples, families and groups who are constantly doing good.

At MarinLink, we experience the philanthropic energy of these people every day. With our Fiscal Sponsorship Program, we are able to support their passion to address unmet community needs. Among these Projects are:

Energy initiatives (LEAN~ Local Energy Aggregation Network)

A community bicycle shop (The Bicycle Works)

A sailing school for the visually impaired (Marin Sailing School).

But the projects don’t just stop there. They also include environmental initiatives, garden exchanges, gardens, a charter school, programs that serve veterans, music, animals and MORE. We are privileged to work with individuals who invest their time and talents to make a difference in the world.

While celebrating our 10^th year at MarinLink we paused (ever so briefly) to celebrate our successes. In 2012 we generated $1 million through our projects and programs. Combine that with the generosity of the Mall at Northgate and the fact that we have one paid staff, a full time volunteer, countless part time volunteers and a sound ability for risk taking and chutzpah.

MarinTrolleys, the proposed Ross Valley Trolley from San Rafael to Fairfax, has its home with us as does Warm Wishes, which will celebrate 20 years of annually providing 5,000 backpacks filled with warm items to our street communities throughout the Bay Area.

Yes, things are constantly changing and for the good. As long innovation and faith fuel the fires of invention there is no shortage of ways to make things happen to transform communities…we made a million and we gave it back. That’s cause for celebration.

Warm Wishes creates a personal relationship between our volunteers and the street community when once a year volunteers distribute 5,000 “Street Packs” or backpacks stuffed with new, warm gloves, scarves, hats, wool socks and rain ponchos to homeless men and women and children, living on the streets of the Bay Area. The winter accessories, manufactured under the direction of and funded by Warm Wishes, help them survive the difficult weather months.

Warm Wishes Wins 49ers Community Quarterback Award

Congratulations to Bill Hamm, Founder of Warm Wishes!, one of five finalists who won The 49ers Community Quarterback Award 2012. Bill Hamm started Warm Wishes! as a result of giving his own gloves to a homeless man on the street in San Francisco in December 1993. As a result of that experience Bill and his wife Nina began gathering the resources: money AND people, to assemble 5,000 “StreetPacks”-backpacks filled with a warm cap, gloves, scarf, socks, rain poncho and a holiday card made by local school children, to distribute thoughout the Bay Area to our sheltered, homeless and on the streets during the coldest months of the year. Warm Wishes! serves over 40 agencies to provide warm items for their guests and clients.

The screening is taking place on Wednesday, February 13th, from 6:30 to 9:00 pm, at the Marin County Office of Education, located at 1111 Las Gallinas Ave in San Rafael, and is appropriate for ages 11 years and up.
