Youth Cooking Services teaches nutrition and inspires lifelong healthy cooking and eating habits through hands-on cooking classes to students from low-income communities.
Youth Cooking Services was founded as “Kids Cooking for Life” in 2009 by successful entrepreneur and restaurant owner Ted Smith who was dismayed by kids’ growing reliance on convenience and fast food options and the corresponding increase in obesity across the country. Since our inception eight years ago, we have taught over 6,500 students throughout the San Francisco Bay Area about the importance of healthy eating.
Trained instructors with a wealth of knowledge and experience in nutrition, the culinary arts, agriculture and elementary education lead our classes. Children are exposed to all aspects of food preparation and sanitation, learn about where our food comes from, master knife skills, learn to read and understand nutrition labels, and learn about heart health, diabetes prevention and much more.
